German Language School of North Bay

German Language School of North Bay

The German Language School of the North Bay was founded in 1967 in Novato, California, by families seeking to preserve the German cultural heritage and language within the rich multicultural landscape of Sonoma and Marin. Today, we carry on that mission as a non-profit Saturday school and community committed to furthering the language, culture, and customs of German-speaking countries to our local community and beyond—just as we have for almost 60 years.

As a nonprofit, our support is through registration, fundraisers, tax-deductible donations, and grants. Our school membership consists of teachers, administrators, professionals, and paraprofessionals passionate about the advancement of German. We are run by an all-volunteer board that wishes to carry on the strong traditions of our school and share that culture with others. Our membership is made up of the parents of enrolled students as well as all the adult students.

We are members of, and connected with, other supporting clubs, schools, and organizations associated with German culture, language and events in San Francisco and the North Bay.

German School of San Francisco

German School of San Francisco

We believe all children have different learning styles and develop at their own pace.

To learn a language, students need to be actively involved in the learning process, experiencing a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and materials. We recognize that young children learn through play, movement, music and hands-on activities, and our curriculum incorporates traditional children’s games, puppet-theater and play-acting, and songs, arts and crafts from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Each semester concludes with a festive celebration where the classes perform for friends, family and the school community.

Deutsche Sprachschule Colorado

Deutsche Sprachschule Colorado

German language School Colorado believes that learning another language deepens your cultural understanding, allows you to communicate with locals when traveling and can provide study or career opportunities. Learning a second language offers a wide range of positive benefits and can also be an exciting and fun hobby.

DSS Colorado offers German language classes for all proficiency levels and age groups. Children ages 3 -18 will learn with other children in their age group and level. Throughout their learning journey we will prepare the children for the A1 - DSD II language exams. The DSD I and DSD II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom) are German language proficiency tests administered by the German government (ZfA - Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen). Passing the DSD II exam demonstrates a high level of German language competency, often required for admission to German universities or Studienkolleg (preparatory courses).

Kinderstube

Kinderstube

Bay Area Kinderstube (BAKS) is a full-immersion German-language preschool for children between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years. Our mission is to make German language development an integral part of the social, emotional, and cognitive development of the child. Most of our children come from homes in which one family member speaks German.

The BAKS approach embraces play- and theme-based learning in a mixed-age environment, with an emphasis on arts, music and community. Our goal is to foster confident, self-sufficient individuals who are caring and responsible.

We are licensed to serve a maximum of 30 children per day. The School currently employs 2 full-time and 5 part-time teachers ensuring a 1:6 ratio throughout the day.

BAKS is a unique preschool with a warm and open sense of community. Thanks to the mingling of many cultures and ethnicities, and the strong culture of volunteerism, the BAKS community is lively and engaged. The annual celebration of Laternenfest, a traditional German holiday, draws many families from beyond the school, creating a memorable neighborhood event. BAKS families can also participate in our semi-annual camping trip that is organized by volunteer parents.

GASANC

GASANC

Founded in 1991, we are an umbrella organization representing the independently operated German language Saturday schools in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. We are designed as a collaborative, bottom-up structured organization where our member schools work together, collaborate, and network with each other. For the past 30 years, we have supported our member schools by representing them to the greater German community, including the German government, other German and cultural organizations, and the community. We work together to share information, expertise, and to support each other.

Additionally, we network with other local and national German and German language organizations. Through the relationships we foster with those organizations, we help further the common goal of keeping the German language alive and available in the Bay Area.

Our member schools primarily provide German language instruction on Saturday mornings. This includes teaching reading, writing, speaking, and the culture of German-speaking countries. Our schools provide this education to students of all ages and levels of German – native speakers, heritage learners, and students learning German as a second language or foreign language. They fill a valuable gap for German language education in the US, where German has been increasingly phased out as a foreign language option in schools.

We assist our schools in preparing their students for elite German exams as well as helping them proctor those exams. Our schools are able to offer the US-based tests from the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and the Advanced Placement (AP) exam. Our schools also offer the German-based tests IVA  A1 and A2 as well as the DSD I and DSD II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom). With successful achievement on these test, students can potentially earn credit for college and qualify for university in Germany.

Multilingualism is the norm in most of the world and we believe that children who speak and write more than one language will be better prepared for life in the 21st century with its growing global economy. The best way to master another language is to start learning at an early age.

By exposing our students to a new culture, we instill in them respect for the diversity of humankind and promote international awareness and informed, active and responsible world citizenship. Teaching them respect and empathy for the individual person will help them to become balanced self-confident individuals.
